Well, I'm all moved in (for a couple months) here in New Mexico. It's great! I miss the Fuse, though. I've only got internet at the church, so I'm listening in the office right now. :-)
The other thing I don't have down here (besides the Fuse) is my scale. It was way too heavy to try to bring down in my suitcase! So I don't have an official weigh in for you, but I'll start taking measurements again and keep track of which direction I'm moving.
I'm eating a lot of fruit... I think my body might be craving it because it's got so much water in it. I'm not keeping junky food in the house, so when I want a snack it's an apricot or a banana. I need to get some protein in the fridge, though, too. Right now it's just eggs! I haven't cooked much yet. I ought to get back on sparkpeople.com and start tracking things again. It's easier to do when you don't have a million options and a bunch of bad stuff in the fridge!

Weight: 192
Total Lost: 17 lbs
It's been a while (again) since I posted, and I only have a really sorry excuse for it, too. I didn't lose much weight. I exercised, I ate reasonably (the same as I have been), and I didn't lose weight. Hello, Plateau.
The last couple weigh ins have been pretty disappointing. And I wasn't expecting today to be any better, but it was. A little. In 3 weeks I've lost 3 pounds. But hey, it's still moving in the right direction, and I've been exercising more. They say muscle weighs more than fat, right? So I must just be getting buff. ;-) (For real, though, I saw my biceps in the mirror the other day... haven't seen definition in my arms in like 5 years!)

I would walk 500 miles...
217 lbs.
27 lbs. lost/73 lbs. left to go
$5/pound pledged/$135 raised
Ok, I didn't quite walk 500 miles. :)
But, on Friday and Saturday I did walk at Relay for Life. I wore my pedometer, and over the course of those 24 hours, I did log in 9 miles! My feet STILL hurt! But it was worth it. And not for the fitness aspect, but for the cause I was walking for.
I only lost 1 lb. this week. That may be because although I did a lot of walking at Relay, I did a lot of eating too.
This week is our church's VBS, so I'll be keeping busy in the mornings, and that will be helpful on the snacking front.
See you here again next week!

I'm a quitter and a loser.
218 lbs.
4 lbs. lost/26 lbs. lost total
$5/lb. pledged
$130 raised so far
I need to confess, I quit boot camp before it was over.
It was the food plan that did me in. It was so restrictive. Last weekend, I went on a huge eating binge. And I mean binge. I didn't STOP eating. :(
Emotional binge eating has been an issue for me for several years now. That's the main reason I'm overweight now. If I am feeling stressed or upset, I can, and have on several occasions, eaten an entire package of cookies at one sitting. Then I feel awful about it later. And because I'm feeling awful... I eat.
I hadn't binged since April, when I started Lose for the Fuse. Then boot camp, and last weekend, happened. I haven't felt the depression and self loathing that comes with the binging since April, and it scared me.
So... I quit.
Being constantly on edge about what I was eating, fearing writing it in my food journal, fearing having it read by the instructor and the rest of the class do sprints because I "cheated"... it so wasn't worth it.
I've been doing better, getting back on track, this week. I did binge on kettle corn yesterday though. One day at a time, I guess.
On a positive note, despite last weekends binge, when I weighed myself on Monday, I was down 4 pounds. I've officially met my 25 pounds down goal!! Woo hoo!!
I'm starting to get comments by people that they've noticed I'm losing weight. And it feels good. I'm starting to notice, too... I can tell I have a waist again! And my face isn't as puffy as it was. I'll always have chipmunk cheeks, but at least now they don't look quite so full of nuts. :)
Tonight and tomorrow, I'm walking in Relay for Life. That will be a lot of good exercise. Plus, it makes me feel good to know I'm doing it in memory of an in honor of several people who mean a lot to me.

I'm a slacker... sorry.
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Last week was depressing--I was up 1 pound to 198. I'd been slacking and not exercising, and wasn't as careful with what I ate. Good lesson--hopefully one I won't have to learn again! So here are this week's stats:
Weight: 195!
Lost: 3 lbs
Total lost: 14 lbs.
I'm excited! 14 pounds is a lot. My goal on the Lose for the Fuse stuff is 40 pounds, but I'm really aiming for more like 50. (Because at my first weigh in I was heavier than I thought I was!) This is the skinniest I've been since my sister got married a year and a half ago. And then I was my skinniest after the wedding, because we'd been so busy I hadn't eaten a decent meal in days! It's good to know that I could pull that dress out of the closet and not pop the zipper! (I might do that, just for the encouragement...)
I have a new favorite piece of exercise equipment. It's called the "twister exerciser" and it's this really corny thing that my aunt bought in the '80s or something. It's a disc about a foot in diameter that... well, it's like a lazy susan that you stand on. It's not nearly as dangerous as I thought it would be--I haven't fallen off once, and I'm a klutz! I brought it to the station because I thought it was funny, but I've been reading a lot about the importance of core muscles (abs, sides, back), and Sara & I gave it a spin... literally. You stand on it and twist around, and it's a pretty good muscle strengthener. We keep it right in the studio, and when the mics aren't on, we twist around on it. It's actually kinda fun! (And this way, when I finally lose enough weight that I can see some muscle shapes around that area, there will be muscle there to see!)

temptation
So, I've been doing pretty good with this food plan that I have to follow with boot camp. I haven't really been jonesing for pop or beer or anything, and I haven't been particularly starving. But... today has been hard.
We went to an open house. There was sooo much food there that I would have loved. But, I did alright, because there was a fruit salad, and instead of having tacos I just took some lettuce and tomatoes and puts salsa on it. And I had baked beans. But then we went to another friend's house for a small gathering, and as we sat around the island in the kitchen, I was surrounded by food. Potato chips, cole slaw, hot dogs, burgers... and I was soooo hungry.
Now, Lance is making bacon. The smell is literally making my mouth water! I guess I can go make a piece of turkey bacon, but come on... it's NOT the same!

so so sore....
My first session of bootcamp was last night. I am sooo sore right now! I did more sit ups and push ups than I've done since high school. I tried to do my homework a little while ago, and just couldn't do the ones that involve those muscles. I'll try again after the Aleve kicks in.
The diet plan is going to be tough, too. Especially no pop. I am addicted to Diet Pepsi lately! But, we can have tea, so I'll be drinking lots of iced green tea.
I'm not allowed to look at the scale for the next month, so I won't be weighing in until boot camp is done. So hopefully at the end I'll have a dramatic loss to report!

pre boot camp weigh in for Paula
221 lbs.
3.5 lbs. lost/23 lbs. lost total
$5/lb. pledged
$115 raised so far
I weighed in at home again this week. The price of gas is going to be making it difficult to drive the 40 miles round trip to the Fuse stations. I'm bummed, because I love chatting with Sara and Eli, and sharing our successes and challenges.
I'm very pleased with the 3.5 pounds I lost the past two weeks. Especially since on Memorial Day weekend I went camping, and went completely off the wagon. I do have to confess, that cheeseburger I had, the first since the beginning of April, tasted soooo good. But, now I'm back on track.
I start Boot Camp this evening. I'm very nervous. Growing up, I hated P.E. I've never been fast, or coordinated. I was always the slowest one in the class, and was very self-conscious because of it. I also had a teacher (Mrs. Cerny), who didn't grade on effort, but performance, and gave me the only C's of my academic career. I'm trying to keep in mind all I can do is just do my best, and if it's slower than the rest of the participants, so be it. But those childhood experiences still cast a cloud over it. Please pray for me, that I do well, and maintain a positive attitude during Boot Camp.

Paula's going to boot camp
My best friend, Kristy, let me know about a fitness boot camp being run by an instructor at CMU. It's going to meet frequently during the month of June. It will include group workouts (outside at local parks), accountability groups, and a food plan.
I'm not sure what to expect. However I have watched both the show "Work Out" on Bravo and "Celebrity Fit Club Boot Camp" on VH1 (both guilty pleasures). So I know, it's NOT going to be easy! When I was young, and in relatively good shape, I was still the last kid picked for teams in gym class. Now, that I'm older, and fatter...... Yikes!!!

Eli's Back!
OK, last week I didn't weigh in because I was on vacation.
It was really great to see my friend Paul graduate from flight school! He must work out like crazy, though, because he's always been really good about keeping track of what he eats and eating really well to maximize weight loss (he's a wrestler), but he was chowing down! I'd sit there with a sub and a water and watch him eat a double cheeseburger with fries and the biggest glass of sweet tea in creation! I didn't feel too bad for myself, though, because I loosened up on the diet a little bit after I went to the Army Ball and was done fitting into my formal dress! (Also, I really like subs, so when that's a healthy alternative to a double cheeseburger, I'm not too bummed.)
This week I came in planning to weigh in on Monday and--the scale was gone! The remodeling here at the station means things are in all sorts of weird places, and we couldn't find the scale for anything. So Paula weighed in at home and I was waiting until the scale showed up.
It showed up today.
I wasn't sure about weighing in today. I hadn't planned for it, so I ate a big healthy breakfast and I've already drank a half liter of water! But I'm supposed to be below 200lbs now, and since the inches around my waist were still going down, I thought I'd hop on and see where I'm at. So here's my unofficial weigh in: 198.5! I've lost 10.5 pounds, and 6 inches off my waist! It's so nice to see my clothes finally fitting better.

almost to the 20 pound mark
225.5 lbs.
3.5 lbs. lost/18.5 lbs. lost total
$5/lb. pledged
$92.50 raised so far
The official Fuse Losers scale has temporarily gone missing, with all of the remodeling being done at the station, so my weigh in was done here at home. My scale has been pretty accurate, so I'm confident the lost it shows is correct. And I'm definitely pleased! I was hoping that I had reached the 20 pounds lost milestone this week. Hopefully I'll reach it next week. I was most excited about my waist measurement. I'm under the 40" mark! I've lost 5" so far off of my waist, and I'm starting to see a difference. It's really boosted my self confidence, I'm starting to feel "pretty" again.
My biggest challenge coming up is that we are going camping this coming weekend. That usually means eating allll day. I've found some recipes for healthy low fat muffins, and trail mix, and I plan on bringing fruit and fat free hot dogs. I am going to allow myself to splurge a Smore or 2 though. :)

no weigh in to report, but...
I didn't weigh in at the Fuse this week. I came down with a bad cold this past weekend, and just didn't feel up to driving out. My scale here at home showed I was down 1 1/2 pounds, but that's not the "official" scale I'm using, so we'll just have to wait til next week's weigh in.
I have, however, dropped a pants size! I've gone from 22's, which were just barely staying up (I guess that's one positive side of being bottom heavy?), to 20's. I'm taking the 22's to Goodwill this week. No hanging on to them "just in case", they are out of the house because I'm NOT going to be that size again!!
One challenge I've had the past few days is the fact I'm sick. Besides not having the energy to get out and walk, I just want to eat comfort food. I did binge on some homemade Slovak pastry my grandmother sent home with me on Sunday. But, now I'm back on track. I'll be happy when I get some energy back, though.

dieting and PMS = frustration
I am soooo craving all things chocolate right now. I have indulged in 2 Kraft Handi Snak chocolate pudding cups (100 calories each) and a Russell Stovers sugar free peanut butter cup. But they just aren't cutting it. I am craving chocolate chip cookies like there's no tomorrow.
I was doing ok with everything, with minimal bad food cravings, until the evil hormones hit. Please, if anyone is reading this has any suggestions.. I'm all ears!

the scale's moving again for Paula!
229lbs.
5 lbs. lost/15 lbs. lost total
$5/lb. pledged
$75 raised so far
Yay, the scale moved this week! And quite a bit too!
I think one reason that the scale didn't show any loss last week was due to me eating quite a bit of salty foods the weekend before, paired with not drinking enough water. Salt = bloating. At least, for me it does. So I'm trying to steer away from the salty stuff, or at least compensate by drinking extra water to flush some of the extra water weight away.
I stayed active last week. I did get out and walk twice, and yesterday I mowed the lawn. My arms and shoulders are achy today, and my face was beet red yesterday by the time I was done mowing. Yes.... I'm definitely out of shape!
A motivation for me to keep walking is I'm doing three different events this summer that will involve lots of walking - Relay for Life in June, a 5K walk at the Mint Festival in St. Johns in August, and the Mackinaw Bridge bridge walk on Labor Day. I don't want to be hurting and huffing and puffing during any of these.
I'm hoping to get a used bike at some point this week too, through Freecycle. Then Anna and I will be able to go for bike rides!
Until next week!!

Eli is exercising!
Weight: 204
Lost: 5
Raised: $60
Well, like Paula, the inches are going down, but the scale didn't. It was kind of a bummer! It's amazing to see what a difference that 5 lbs. makes, though. I'm definitely a slightly different shape than I was a month ago!
I've been using the exercise bike my parents have stashed in the basement pretty much everyday for a week now, and that helps, too. (I did wimp out yesterday, but I also spent quite a while stripping wallpaper with a scraper here at the Fuse, and that was a bit of a workout!) I've been stretching, but not enough, because today I've got a cramp that just won't quit... Makes exercising much less appealing! I stretched a lot this morning, and it's not as bad, but it's still a pain. [If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I'm new to this exercise thing.]

Scale didn't move, but the tape measure is a bit tighter.... (Paula)
234 lbs.
0 lbs. lost/10 lbs. lost total
$5/lb. pledged
$50 raised so far
Today's weigh in was a little bit disappointing because the scale didn't move. I am thankful I didn't gain, but after the huge loss the past two weeks, I would have liked to have seen a little of that momentum kept.
I have lost another inch off of both my waist and hips, though, and that's encouraging!!
I'm not really completely surprised that there wasn't a loss for the past week. I didn't go out and walk like I had the previous week. And I slacked off of eating really healthy food, like fruit and vegetables. So, that just confirms to me that I'm just going to have to work harder to get this weight off.

And I slacked off of eating really healthy food, like fruit and vegetables. So, that just confirms to me that I'm just going to have to work harder to get this weight off.

I've lost 10% of my total pounds I want to lose!!
234 lbs
10 lbs lost
$5/pound pledged
$50 raised so far
I had an amazing weigh in this week - 6 pounds!!!!!
I'm attributing a lot of that to water weight. And I don't expect to have such dramatic results each week. But, I'll take it!
I've slowly been making some positive changes. I'm planning out what I'll be cooking for dinner at least a week in advance, and writing it in my planner. That way I'm not caught in the "oh, there's nothing to fix, let's just order pizza or get McDonald's" trap. I've been finding some really good recipes, and have been faithful to sticking to serving sizes. It's not easy, because some of these meals have been so good, I could have easily gone back for seconds, or even thirds. When I'm packaging up the left overs, I've been doing that by serving size, too, so it's easy for me to know how much I'm eating the next day if I eat it for lunch.
I was much more active last week. My friend Angela and I walked the parks here in Mt. Pleasant twice, both times 3 miles. I was really sore the days after those walks, but like my friend Kristy puts it, it's a good kind of sore. :)
I've really been pushing myself to drink those 8 cups of water a day. It's not easy, and I don't always reach my goal, but I'll just keep trying.
Oh, and I found a TaeBo workout tape at the Salvation Army thrift store, though I've yet to try it yet.
Until next week!

recipes I'm discovering along the way
Hi everyone,
I started a separate blog when I'm sharing the healthy recipes I'm finding along the way. Each recipe I post will be one I've personally made, and eaten, and liked. :) That way any of our supporters, or my fellow team mates, can try them for themselves, too!

Eli's Weigh-In
205 lbs.
4 lbs. down
*Whew!* I really wasn't sure I was going to lose weight last week, with all the food at FunDrive and then a church potluck on Sunday. But I tried to manage my portions better--no seconds at that potluck! And I eat breakfast everyday, which I've know for a long time is key. (When my best friend was wrestling in high school and he needed to cut weight, he always ate a big breakfast.)
Now, the 4 pounds I lost was over two weeks, not just the last one, but it's still pretty exciting to me. Seeing those numbers go down is good motivation!

4 pounds down!! (Paula)
240 lbs.
4 lbs. down, 96 lbs. to go
51 weeks left
$5 per pounds pledged
$20 raised so far
I was very pleasantly surprised this morning when I weighed in this morning at the Fuse studios, to find I'd lost four pounds! Woo hoo! I'm trying not to get excited about that significant of a loss right away, because it's probably mostly water weight. But, it's 4 pounds I am no longer carrying around with me, and I'm determined not to gain it back either!
I've been doing pretty well with reducing my calorie intake. The first few days were sooo hard, I was constantly hungry. But the past couple of days I've noticed if I small, healthy snacks during the day, it helps. I'm trying to stick with foods with protein, like string cheese or yogurt, because I have read that protein fills you up longer than carbs do.
One challenge for me is trying to drink enough water. My goal is 8 cups a day, and so far I've been able to make it up to 5. I'm going to have to find a way to make drinking water more fun, or not as much of a chore.
I will be starting walking this week, too, with the beautiful spring weather that's forecasted. I was supposed to start today, but I strained a muscle in my back on Saturday, and it's still pretty painful to move, so I want to let it heal for another day or two.
I've been overwhelmed with the support I've received. I have friends offering to walk with me, their diet tips, and lots of words and prayers of encouragement. Thank you!!

Friday Night: Lose for the Fuse Style
Hello! Eli here.
Last night was a lot of fun--a group of my friends were going to the Saginaw Sting game (did you know that Saginaw has an arena football team? I didn't!) and I dragged Sara and Josh Tho. with me. Sara the Intern isn't much of a sports fan, but we both know football fairly well, so we kept interested in the game. It was also very cool getting to chat with her about stuff other than the station, too, since we hardly ever see each other away from work.
One of the things we talked about was losing weight. Since we're both doing Lose for the Fuse now and we both just spent the whole FunDrive week eating stuff we shouldn't and more than we should, Monday's first group meeting is looking a little bit intimidating. I'm not very far into it, so if I haven't lost weight I won't be heartbroken... Sara's put a lot more work into it at this point, though, and she was really worried about weighing in on Monday morning. I told her about something that I read on sparkpeople.com (that's the website Paula & I are using to track what we're eating and help us lose weight): even if your weight goes up, don't lose sight of how much healthier you are! Her weight may not be where she wants it, but she's been exercising and eating better, and that makes her so much healthier.
I'm pretty excited about this weigh-in, myself. Not so much for the numbers, but for the chance to get the Fuse Losers together and start encouraging each other! Don't forget, we'd love your encouragement, too. Check out the pledge page to support 101.7 the Fuse by donating a dollar per pound for one of the Fuse Losers, or just leave us a comment on one of the posts!

Day one for Paula
Today I officially started Losing for the Fuse. Due to being on vacation when Eli and the other losers started, I'm a bit later than everyone else. I do need to confess... I'm hungry! I have done really well so far today - I went to help out at the Fundrive at the Fuse station, and faced having cheesecake, coffee cake, and other delicious treats in front of me. I did have half of an apricot bar.
To help to monitor what I'm eating, I'm going to be using the website sparkpeople.com. It is free to use, and very helpful. You enter in everything you eat during the day, and it calculates the calories, fat, sodium, etc. for you. You can also enter in what activity you've done, and it informs you how many calories you've burned. They also have message boards and informative articles, too.
I'm trying to remind myself, I'm just starting out, and my self control will get better as I go on. But right now, I really would love some of my husband's Oreos!

First Post--from FunDrive!
Hello! The Fuse Losers are off and rolling now... and hopefully not as roly-poly as a week or two ago!
Here's the thing: just as we're getting started, it's FunDrive, the worst time to try to diet here at the Fuse. I dearly love food, and there's lots of food here. Thank goodness for Carol, who brought us fruit! I'm sitting across the room from coffee cake, scones, apricot-glazed shortbread, starbucks brownies, garlic bread, chili, and somewhere around here there are two really big yummy cheesecakes from Max & Emily's. (Thank goodness I don't know where those are!)
In an effort to not blow it I ate breakfast at home today, and it probably helped to not come in hungry! I weighed myself Monday--down one pound from the week before! I weighed in again today, and I'm down two more pounds! I don't know quite how that happened, but it may be that my body's metabolism is moving faster due to the last few weeks worth of moving more and eating breakfast. I'll check in later when life's a little more normal!
